Schrödinger's cat was meant to mock quantum mechanics, not prove it
Erwin Schrödinger came up with his famous thought experiment as a critique of how absurd a certain interpretation of quantum physics was.
Pop culture treats "Schrödinger's cat" almost like a scientific proof: a cat in a sealed box, linked to the random decay of an atom, is supposedly both "alive and dead" at once until someone looks inside.
The creator of this thought experiment, physicist Erwin Schrödinger, never proposed it as a description of reality. He came up with it in the 1930s as a sarcastic jab at the so-called Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics — he wanted to show how absurd the consequences become when you literally carry quantum rules over from the world of particles to the world of cats.
In other words: "Schrödinger's cat" was originally meant to sound ridiculous and absurd, as an argument along the lines of "surely this can't work that way in the real world" — not as a serious theory about real animals that are literally alive and dead at the same time.
Ironically, that ironic critique went on to become one of the most recognizable symbols of quantum physics in the world — far better known than the mechanism it was originally meant to ridicule.
