In 1859, Earth was hit by the strongest geomagnetic storm ever recorded, now known as the Carrington Event — the result of a massive solar flare and coronal mass ejection.
Auroras were spotted as far away as the tropics, near the equator — a spectacle normally reserved for the poles.
The twist: telegraph operators around the world reported their equipment sparking, and some lines kept transmitting even after being physically disconnected from their power source — running purely on current the storm induced directly in the wires.
The stakes: if a storm of that magnitude hit today's world of satellites, power grids, and electronics, the fallout would be incomparably worse than in the 19th century — it's one of the real-world scenarios space agencies actively monitor for.
