Three prisoners escaped from an "escape-proof" prison — and no one knows if they survived
In 1962, three inmates broke out of the island prison of Alcatraz using a makeshift raft, and their fate has never been conclusively determined.
In June 1962, three inmates — Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin — escaped from Alcatraz, a prison on an island in San Francisco Bay considered impossible to break out of.
For months, the prisoners had been digging through the walls of their cells, hiding the holes behind fake ventilation grilles, and left dummy heads made of soap, paper, and real hair in their beds to delay detection of the escape.
They used a makeshift raft and life vests made from raincoats glued together with steam to leave the island — after that, they were never seen again, and the FBI officially considers the case unsolved, though formally closed due to the passage of time.
The significance: to this day, it remains unknown whether the men drowned in the bay's powerful currents or managed to reach land and disappear — the case remains one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in the history of American incarceration.
