Over 100 colonists vanished without a trace, leaving behind only one carved word
The English colony on Roanoke Island in North America disappeared in the 1590s, and its fate remains unexplained to this day.
In 1587, a group of more than a hundred English colonists settled on Roanoke Island off the coast of what is now North Carolina, founding one of the first English settlements in North America.
When a supply ship finally arrived in 1590 — delayed three years by England's war with Spain — it found not a living soul. The only clue was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a wooden post, with no signs of struggle or hasty escape.
No one has ever found conclusive evidence of what happened to the colonists — theories range from assimilation with nearby Native American communities, to death by starvation, to an attack by another tribe, to relocation elsewhere.
The significance: the fate of the Roanoke colony remains one of the oldest unsolved mysteries in North American history — despite numerous archaeological excavations, a definitive answer has still never been confirmed.
