Every bit of matter humans have ever seen is less than one-twentieth of the universe
Ordinary matter — stars, planets, people — makes up only a tiny fraction of everything the universe actually contains.
Observations of galaxy motion show that visible matter — stars, gas, planets, everything a telescope can actually detect — simply doesn't generate enough gravity to explain why galaxies hold together instead of flying apart at the speeds they rotate.
For the numbers to add up, cosmologists have to assume the existence of so-called dark matter — a substance that interacts gravitationally but neither emits nor absorbs light, making it completely invisible to any telescope.
Current estimates put ordinary matter — everything we know of, everything we're built from — at only about 5% of the universe's total content. The rest is dark matter (about 27%) and the even more mysterious dark energy (about 68%).
The stakes: this means more than 95% of the universe is made of something scientists still can't directly observe or definitively explain — even though its existence is well-supported both mathematically and observationally.
