Lebanon has stone blocks so heavy nobody knows exactly how they got there

At the temple complex of Baalbek, in modern-day Lebanon, built in Roman times atop an older structure, sit stone blocks weighing hundreds of tons each, incorporated into the foundation of the temple platform.

Nearby, in a neighboring quarry, lies an even bigger block, never finished or moved, which gives a sense of the scale of the builders' ambition — and of just how close to the limits of the era's transport technology they pushed.

Historians broadly agree the Romans had the logistics needed — wooden sledges, rollers, large numbers of people and draft animals — to theoretically move blocks like these, but no surviving Roman account spells out exactly how it was done at Baalbek specifically.

The absence of that one direct source means the exact method remains a matter of engineering reconstruction and educated guesswork rather than settled, documented fact — even though the fact that it was done at all is beyond doubt.
