These desert drawings were only ever meant to be seen from the sky
The Nazca Lines are giant centuries-old geoglyphs whose full shape can barely be made out except from high above.
On the desert plain of Nazca in Peru, spread across several hundred square kilometers, sit hundreds of lines and figures scratched into the earth by clearing away the darker surface stones — everything from simple geometric patterns to massive animal outlines: a hummingbird, a monkey, a spider.
They were most likely made between 500 BCE and 500 CE, by people with no known flying technology of any kind — and yet some of the figures are so enormous that their full shape only really becomes legible from the air, at a height nobody on the ground could have reached.
Why they were built is still just a matter of competing theories: an astronomical calendar, ceremonial processional paths, or a message aimed at gods who — in the builders' belief system — watched from above.
The catch: no theory fully explains how the builders pulled off such precise proportions without ever seeing the whole picture from a bird's-eye view — they probably used simple measuring techniques based on scaling up small sketches, but the exact method is still being studied.
