This fungus hijacks an ant's body and pilots it like a puppet
Ophiocordyceps fungi force infected ants to climb vegetation before erupting from their heads.
Fungi in the genus Ophiocordyceps infect certain ant species living in tropical forests, entering the insect's body as microscopic spores.
Once infected, the fungal growth starts influencing the ant's behavior in a way that looks almost deliberately engineered — the infected insect abandons its normal duties and climbs nearby vegetation, then clamps its jaws onto a leaf or stem at an oddly precise spot, right before dying.
That positioning is no accident: the height and humidity at that exact spot are optimal for the fungus's further development, which then bursts through the dead ant's head and releases spores that rain down on other ants passing below.
Scientists still don't fully understand the exact chemical mechanism behind this manipulation, but research suggests the fungus acts on the ant's nervous system with chemical compounds, seizing control of its muscles rather than directly attacking its brain.
