In Africa, nature switched on a nuclear reactor all by itself about two billion years ago
A uranium deposit in Gabon shows traces of a self-sustaining nuclear fission reaction that occurred with no human involvement at all.
In 1972, French scientists analyzing uranium ore from a mine in Oklo, in present-day Gabon, noticed something odd: the proportions of certain uranium isotopes were slightly different from every other known ore on Earth — as if part of the material had already been "burned" in a reactor.
Further research confirmed that about two billion years ago, thanks to a specific combination of a high concentration of fissile uranium-235 (naturally much higher back then than it is today) and the presence of water acting as a neutron moderator, a controlled, self-sustaining chain reaction spontaneously occurred at this spot — a natural nuclear reactor.
The reactor most likely operated intermittently for hundreds of thousands of years, cyclically switching "on" and "off" depending on groundwater levels, before its natural fuel supply was finally exhausted.
The phenomenon is now treated as a natural experiment that helps scientists understand the long-term behavior of radioactive waste, though the exact dynamics of this ancient reactor's operating cycles are still being analyzed.
