The simple act of watching a particle can change how it behaves
In quantum experiments, measuring which path a particle takes changes the outcome of the experiment, even though nothing physically touches it.
In the classic double-slit experiment, particles like electrons or photons form an interference pattern on a screen, as if passing through both slits at once. But when scientists add a detector that measures which slit the particle actually went through, the interference pattern vanishes and the particles start behaving like ordinary little balls.
This isn't about observer consciousness in the everyday sense — a mere measurement is enough, even an automated one with no human ever looking at the result. Just the possibility of obtaining "which path" information is enough to disrupt the effect.
Physicists agree on the mathematics describing this phenomenon — it's been well confirmed experimentally for decades — but what exactly "happens" to the particle at the moment of measurement remains disputed between competing interpretations of quantum mechanics.
It's one of the reasons quantum physics can still sound more like philosophy than engineering — even though real devices, from lasers to transistors, run on it.
