A bat spends most of the day hanging head-down, gripping the ceiling of a cave or a branch with the claws of its hind feet β a position that would quickly exhaust a human's muscles.
In a bat, the mechanism works completely differently: the tendons connecting the claws to the rest of the foot act like a ratchet that clamps shut automatically under the weight of the body, keeping the claw locked closed without any active muscle contraction at all.
That lets a bat hang for hours β even after death, its feet stay clamped shut without any muscle tension, until something physically pries the tendon open the other way.
The bigger picture: birds perching on a branch while asleep use this same "energy-free" mechanism β an independently evolved but strikingly similar solution to the same problem: how to rest without losing your grip.
