A kangaroo is physically incapable of walking backward
The structure of a kangaroo's legs, its powerful tail, and the way it moves rule out backward motion entirely — which is why it even ended up on Australia's coat of arms as a symbol of progress.
A kangaroo moves mainly by hopping, with its hind legs working together as a single, springy unit, while its massive, muscular tail acts as a third "leg", balancing and assisting the motion.
This anatomical setup — long feet, rigid ankle joints, and a tail acting as a forward counterweight — means a kangaroo is physically unable to move backward; its body simply doesn't have the mechanics for it.
That's exactly why the kangaroo (alongside the emu, which also can't easily move backward because of how its feet are built) ended up on Australia's coat of arms — both animals symbolize a nation that "only moves forward".
The bigger picture: this is a rare case where an animal's anatomical trait became a deliberately chosen national symbol, rather than just a piece of biological trivia.
