Billions of dollars in bitcoin are gone forever — and no one can get them back

Bitcoin is stored in digital wallets secured by a private key — a string of characters whose loss means permanent, absolute loss of access to the funds, with no "reset password" option whatsoever.

Blockchain analysts estimate that around 20% of all bitcoin ever mined — worth tens of billions of dollars at peak prices — sits in permanently inaccessible wallets: lost hard drives, forgotten passwords, deceased owners who never passed their keys to an heir.

The most famous case: a British IT worker accidentally threw out a hard drive holding the key to a wallet once worth hundreds of millions of dollars — and spent years unsuccessfully petitioning to search the local landfill for it.

The stakes: unlike traditional currencies, which central banks can simply print more of, these "lost" bitcoins are permanently removed from circulation forever — effectively shrinking the real, usable supply of the entire cryptocurrency.
