Japan Sent Thousands of Bombs to the US... on Balloons, Across the Pacific
In 1944-45, Japan launched over 9,000 balloon bombs, riding the jet stream to carry them all the way to North America.
Near the end of World War II, Japan developed the Fu-Go program: hydrogen balloons carrying suspended bombs, launched from the coast and designed to reach North America by riding the newly discovered jet stream in the upper atmosphere.
The scale: between November 1944 and April 1945, more than 9,000 of these balloons were launched, and several hundred actually made it across to the North American continent — the transpacific journey took only a few days.
The twist: the balloon mechanism was surprisingly clever — an automatic system dropped sandbag ballast to maintain the correct altitude during flight, fully automated, with no pilot at all.
The weight of it: the military impact was minimal (a few forest fires, one tragic incident with civilian casualties in Oregon), but the program showed that even pre-computer-era technology could link two continents with a distant, nearly invisible aerial bridge.
