In Strasbourg, People Danced Themselves to Death — And No One Could Make Them Stop
In the summer of 1518, dozens of Strasbourg residents began dancing nonstop for days — and the city’s solution was to... encourage more dancing.
In July 1518, a woman known as Frau Troffea began dancing in the streets of Strasbourg. She didn’t stop. Within a week, dozens of other residents had joined her — at its peak, several hundred people were dancing at once, with no music and no apparent reason.
The scale: people danced until they collapsed from exhaustion — and according to contemporary accounts, some died from strokes, heart attacks, or sheer physical exhaustion.
The twist: city authorities, trusting the doctors of the time who believed the only cure for "hot blood" was... more dancing, hired musicians and set up a dedicated dance hall so the epidemic could "dance itself out." Instead of helping, this likely only prolonged and intensified the phenomenon.
The mechanism is still debated today — from stress-induced mass psychogenic illness (famine, disease, and religious anxiety were all rampant in the region at the time) to a theory of ergot poisoning, a fungus that infects rye. This remains just one hypothesis among several — none fully explains the phenomenon.
