The deadliest peacetime maritime disaster killed more people than the Titanic
The sinking of the Philippine ferry Doña Paz in 1987 after colliding with a tanker killed more people than any other civilian maritime disaster.
On December 20, 1987, the Philippine passenger ferry Doña Paz collided with the oil tanker MT Vector near Marinduque Island in the Philippines.
Contact with the tanker's burning fuel ignited an instant fire on the ferry, which rapidly engulfed its wooden structure — the evacuation was chaotic, partly because the ferry was heavily overloaded beyond its official passenger limit.
Death toll estimates run as high as over 4,000 people — far more than died on the Titanic — though the exact number was never established due to an incomplete passenger list and many unregistered travelers.
The significance: despite the scale of the tragedy, the Doña Paz disaster remains relatively unknown outside the Philippines — unlike the well-documented Titanic, which spawned books and films on a global scale.
