The famous "bodies" of Pompeii are actually plaster casts of the empty space they left behind

In 79 AD, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried the Roman city of Pompeii under a thick layer of ash and volcanic dust, killing residents who failed to escape in time, many from waves of superheated gas and ash.

Over time, the victims' bodies fully decomposed, but the hardened ash surrounding them preserved the exact shape of the cavity they left behind — including the position of the body at the moment of death.

In the 19th century, Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli came up with the idea of filling these empty spaces with plaster — thanks to this technique, we can still see remarkably detailed casts of people in their final moments, down to the details of their clothing and facial expressions.

The significance: thanks to this technique, Pompeii became one of the most haunting and scientifically valuable archaeological sites in the world — offering a glimpse into the daily life of an ancient city frozen, quite literally, in a single moment.
