Observations of the object AT2024wpp show a star tidally shredded by a black hole that, instead of vanishing, started flaring in a strange, repeating rhythm.

AT2024wpp, informally nicknamed "The Whippet," broke that pattern. Instead of a single flash followed by silence, the signal started repeating in an unusually fast rhythm — as if something from the shredded star hadn't fully "given up" right away.
Okay, here's where it gets weird: the simplest available TDE models don't predict this kind of behavior. Some researchers suggest we're watching the remnant of the star's core orbiting the black hole on a tight, repeating path before it finally disappears.
Why it matters: cases like this are rare and valuable — they give astronomers a rare real-time look at exactly how a black hole "eats," step by step, instead of just seeing a flash and then nothing.
