Vultures feed mainly on carrion β often in a heavily advanced state of decay, teeming with bacteria that would cause severe, even fatal, poisoning in most other animals, humans included.
A vulture's stomach acid has an exceptionally low pH, far stronger than in most other vertebrates β corrosive enough to neutralize the bacteria responsible for anthrax, botulism, or cholera before they can cause any harm.
On top of that, a vulture's immune system and gut microbiome are adapted to handle bacterial toxins that manage to survive even that intensely acidic stomach environment.
The bigger picture: this gives vultures a crucial ecological role β by removing contaminated carcasses from the environment before diseases can spread to other animals, they act essentially as the ecosystem's roving sanitation crew.
