Bees can learn to recognize human faces
Despite having a brain the size of a poppy seed, bees in experiments learn to tell one specific human face apart from others.
A bee's brain is smaller than a cubic millimeter and holds around a million neurons β for comparison, the human brain has roughly 86 billion.
And yet in lab experiments, bees have been trained to associate a specific human face with a reward (sugar water) β and they reliably picked out that one face from others, even when the background or lighting changed.
The mechanism: bees probably don't "recognize faces" the way humans do β they treat a face as a complex visual pattern, a configuration of features, and learn it through trial and error, the same way they learn to recognize the shapes of flowers.
It sounds made up. But it points to something real: complicated behavior doesn't always need a big brain β sometimes a small, well-wired network of neurons is enough.
