There's No Single 'Clock' in Your Brain — Your Sense of Time Is a Group Improvisation
Unlike vision or hearing, your sense of time has no single dedicated sense organ — your brain builds it from multiple clues at once.
The eye has a retina, the ear has a cochlea — every classic sense has its own specialized organ. The sense of time has nothing like that.
Instead of one "clock," the brain estimates elapsed time from multiple cues at once: neural activity across several different regions, the pace of metabolic processes, and even the number of new experiences you've had during a given stretch.
That's why time subjectively feels different depending on your emotional state or how novel your surroundings are — an intense, event-packed day of travel ends up feeling longer in memory than a boring day at work, even though both lasted exactly the same number of hours.
So your sense of time isn't so much "read off a dial" as actively constructed by the brain on the fly — which is exactly why it's so easy to trick with boredom, excitement, or plain old sleep deprivation.
