This crab has a stronger grip than a lion's bite

The coconut crab, also known as the robber crab, is the largest land-dwelling arthropod on Earth — adults can span nearly a meter across their legs and weigh several kilograms.

Its front claws generate a grip force that, relative to body mass, ranks among the strongest ever measured in a land animal — strong enough to crack open the tough shell of a coconut, the source of its name.

Despite living and breathing on land as an adult, the coconut crab still depends on the ocean during development — females return to the water to lay eggs, and the young larvae spend their first weeks of life as fully aquatic creatures before coming ashore for the rest of their lives.

This animal can climb trees, and it's reputedly accused (more as folklore than confirmed science) of sneaking into camps at night to steal shiny objects — hence the nickname "robber".
