These Thousands of Hexagonal Rock Columns Look Handmade — But Nobody Built Them

On the coast of Northern Ireland sits a rock formation made up of tens of thousands of tightly packed, mostly hexagonal basalt columns, known as the Giant's Causeway.

The regular, almost geometric shape of the columns formed naturally, when thick beds of basalt lava cooled slowly and evenly after an ancient volcanic eruption — the rock, cracking as it cooled, settled into distinctive, polygonal pillars.

The formation's appearance is so regular that for centuries, local legends explained its origin as the work of a mythical giant building a bridge to Scotland, rather than a natural geological process.

Similar, though less famous, basalt column formations created the same way can be found in several other places around the world, showing that the process of cooling lava cracking into regular shapes isn't a one-off fluke, but a repeatable geological phenomenon.
